The lyrics are practically useless if you don't have the melody. Its only purpose is for you to know the words so you can sing it accurately, and for you to know the meaning... But if its only the melody, the melody is also practically useless without the lyrics... So, long story short, both of them have a mutual relationship that they have to "help" each other out... (I forgot the more accurate term/word for it...)

I don't quite agree with you, if you listen to the melody you will see that the song is quite sad and with lyrics it makes you understand the song more..why don't you try listening to it first?
